Iliopsoas Release – The Muscle of the Soul

The iliopsoas muscle is more than just a deep core muscle—it’s often referred to as the “muscle of the soul.”
Why? Because it plays a crucial role not only in physical movement but also in our emotional and spiritual well-being.

This powerful muscle is the only one that connects your legs to your spine, and it’s also intricately linked to the diaphragm—the primary muscle responsible for breathing. It directly supports the body’s fight-or-flight response, our instinctive survival mechanism when facing threat or danger.
When the iliopsoas holds tension—whether from physical strain or emotional trauma—it can keep the body in a chronic state of alert, blocking ease, safety, and emotional flow.

Physical Symptoms of a Tight or Imbalanced Iliopsoas May Include:

-
Lower back pain

-
Hip and pelvic discomfort

-
Abdominal tension or pain

-
Sciatica or perceived leg-length differences

-
Difficulty walking, standing, or maintaining physical balance

-
Limping, postural issues, or fatigue

-
Menstrual discomfort

-
Reduced mobility or physical defensiveness in stressful environments
Emotional & Psychological Effects

Beyond the physical, an imbalanced iliopsoas may reflect deeper emotional themes, such as:

-
A sense of being unsafe in your environment

-
Difficulty creating safety for yourself

-
Chronic anxiety, hyper-alertness, or panic

-
Challenges with independence or standing up for yourself

-
Low self-esteem or self-worth

-
Emotional residue from trauma (past or present)
This muscle often becomes a storage space for unprocessed emotional memories, particularly those connected to survival, fear, or suppressed instinctual reactions.

When this muscle is gently released and brought back into balance, the body and mind often experience a profound sense of relief and expansion.

Over the past 8 years of my practice, I’ve worked with many individuals suffering from physical and emotional symptoms linked to the iliopsoas. Through intuitive, hands-on therapy and energy-sensitive work, I’ve supported clients in releasing years of built-up tension—freeing them to breathe easier, move more fluidly, and feel emotionally lighter.

My therapies are based on one central understanding - repressed and unexpressed emotions become somatised—stored in the tissues of the body. This can lead to energetic blockages, dysfunctions, and eventually disease.

The iliopsoas is one of the key places where these emotional burdens often lodge, especially during prolonged periods of stress or emotional suppression.

A Note on Emotional Trauma
Emotional trauma is real and serious. While hands-on therapies like iliopsoas release can greatly support the body’s healing, it is always advised to also work with a licensed mental health professional for verbal expression, insight, and deeper integration.
This combination of talk therapy and somatic therapy can be truly transformative!
